Due to the folksy nature of the
narrative, we are sometimes tempted to dismiss the beginning of Genesis as fairy
tales and bedtime stories to tell our children. In fact, Genesis contains some
very important revelations. This list is not complete.
-
God exists
-
God is personal as opposed to
being an impersonal force
-
There is only one God
-
Creation is separate from God
-
Creation is not an extension of
God
-
Creation had a beginning; it is
not eternal
-
God’s Word produces
instantaneous results
-
Creation was made good
-
There is order in creation;
intelligent design
-
Each species is distinct
-
There is a progression in the
creation
-
The seven-day week is of divine
origin
-
God made man in his image and
likeness
-
The human race is composed of
males and females
-
Both males and females are made
in the image and likeness of God
-
Males and females are not
interchangeable. All humans are either male or female; their maleness or
femaleness is an integral part of their individual humanity
-
Humanity is responsible for
managing the earth
-
Death was not created or
intended by God
-
Evil was not created by God
-
There is only one human race
-
What characterizes humanity is
being created in the image and likeness of God. Other superficial
differences such as bone structure, skin colour and hair texture are
irrelevant
-
Sin and death entered the world
through man’s choice
-
Humans are responsible for
their choices and actions
-
The first human sin was one of
disobedience
-
The concrete manifestation of
this sin was through eating
